Transliteration:( Qaaloo tallaahi laqad aatharakal laahu 'alainaa wa in kunnaa lakhaati'een )
They said, "By Allah, surely Allah has preferred you above us, and indeed, we have been sinners [196]."
These words are a sincere confession and repentance from the brothers of Hazrat Yusuf (علیہ السلام).
Their wrongdoing was due to opposition, not enmity. True enmity against a Prophet is kufr (infidelity), requiring renewal of faith through the Kalimah.
Since they only repented without re-declaring faith, it proves their act was based on error in judgment, not on disbelief.
This clarifies that differing with a Prophet’s position due to mistaken reasoning is not apostasy, although it remains a serious wrong.
Scholars draw a comparison here with historical figures like Hazrat Muawiya (رضی اللہ عنہ) and Hazrat Ali (رضی اللہ عنہ), to highlight that disagreement in political or legal matters does not equate to enmity or disbelief.
