Transliteration:( Qaalaj 'alnee 'alaa khazaaa'inil ardi innee hafeezun 'aleem )
"[Joseph] said, 'Set me over the treasures of the land. Indeed, I am trustworthy and knowledgeable [123].'"
This verse provides several important insights:
Merit-Based Appointment: When others are incapable, it is permissible for the most capable individual to take charge, especially if it is necessary for maintaining justice and order. Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace), with his wisdom and knowledge, claimed the responsibility of managing the treasures of the land, as he was the most qualified to do so.
Claiming a Position Based on Merit: It is acceptable to claim a position based on merit. Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace)'s request was based on his capability and trustworthiness, showing that one can rightfully ask for a position if they have the qualifications for it.
Seeking Employment Under an Infidel King: It is permissible to work for an infidel king if the position serves a just purpose. Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) worked under the Pharaoh, an unbeliever, but his work was aligned with justice.
Employment in Questionable Revenue Departments: Seeking employment in departments where the revenue may be of questionable nature is permissible, as long as the purpose of the employment is to administer justice and proper management.
Accepting Gifts from Non-Believers: It is permissible to accept gifts from infidels if there is no violation of Islamic principles. Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) accepted the royal garments and gifts from the Pharaoh’s messengers.
Appointing a Judge under a Cruel King: It is also permissible to be appointed to positions such as a judge under a cruel king, if the goal is to administer justice and maintain order, as Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) did.
Declaring One’s Religion: Concealing one’s religion is forbidden. It is important to declare one’s faith openly, as Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) did, despite working in a foreign land under a non-Muslim ruler.
Comprehensive Knowledge of Prophets: Prophets possess both religious and worldly knowledge, which is divinely granted. Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) had never been a king or practiced agriculture, yet he confidently declared that he was "trustworthy and knowledgeable" in these areas. This knowledge was not learned through traditional schooling, but was inspired by Allah.
