    📖 Commentary of Surah Yusuf – Verse 97

    They said, "O our father, seek forgiveness for us for our sins. Indeed, we have been sinful [205]."

    [205] Acknowledgement of Sin and Request for Forgiveness

    The use of the plural "they said" indicates that more than one brother, including Yahooda, had come from Egypt to meet Hazrat Yaqub (علیہ السلام). While Yahooda was the first to deliver the good news, it appears that other brothers also accompanied him in this emotional reunion.

    Their request to Hazrat Yaqub (علیہ السلام) to seek forgiveness for them reflects a deep admission of guilt and remorse. In Islamic teachings, when a person commits an act of oppression or injustice, the wronged individual must first forgive, and then du‘a for divine forgiveness should be made. Hence, the brothers first asked their father to personally forgive them, and then to pray to Allah Almighty on their behalf.

    This shows a proper etiquette of repentance and an acknowledgment of sincere guilt, as well as the importance of reconciliation with the wronged before seeking Allah's mercy.
