Surah Yusuf Ayat 69 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

150 His brothers informed Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) that they had brought Benyamin with them.

He replied that they had responded well to his wishes Thereafter he treated them all very cordially and hospitabily. He had laid seperate tables for them and made them sit in pairs per table. Because Benyamin was left alone he began to cry and thought to himself that had Hazrat Yusuf been present today he would have sat with me. On seeing him crying Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) said to him since you are alone come and join me at the table.

151. During the meal Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) said to Benyamin how would you like it if I were to take the place of your brother. To this Benyamin replied: Is it possible for anyone to get a brother like you.

But how would it be possible for you to be the son of Hazrat Yaqoob (on whom be peace) and Rachel. Hearing this Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) cried and quietly said "I am Yusuf, but do not disclose this secret to anyone." On hearing this Benyamin was enraptured with ecstasy and said now I would never be separated from you. Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) said that there is no possibility of keeping you behind besides linking something distasteful to you which would give one the reason to keep you back. Benyamin agreed to this. (Tafseer Khazainul Irfaan) As a result of this the following incident took place. From this we learn that whatever took place happened due to a mutual agreement and was not aimed at disgracing Benyamin in any way.

Ibn-Kathir

69. And when they went in before Yusuf, he took his brother (Binyamin) to himself and said: “Verily, I am your brother, so grieve not for what they used to do.”

Yusuf comforts Binyamin

Allah states that when Yusuf’s brothers went in before him along with his full brother Binyamin, he invited them to a place of honor as privileged guests. He granted them gifts and generous hospitality and kindness. He met his brother in confidence and told him the story of what happened to him and that he was in fact his brother. He said to him,

﴿لاتَبْتَئِسْ﴾

`(grieve not) nor feel sad for what they did to me.’ He ordered Binyamin to hide the news from them and to refrain from telling them that the `Aziz is his brother Yusuf. He plotted with him to keep him in Egypt enjoying honor and great hospitality.

(12:69) When they presented themselves before Joseph, he took his brother aside to himself and said: “Verily I am your own brother Joseph; so do not grieve over the manner they have treated you.”[55]

55. The entire story of their reunion after a separation of twenty years or so has been summed up in this brief sentence. In all probability Prophet Joseph might have told him the story of the vicissitudes that ultimately had led to his high rank, and Benjamin in his turn might have related the story of the ill treatment of the heartless step brothers. Then Prophet Joseph might have reassured him that he would not be allowed to go back with them but remain with him. It is also possible that the plan to retain him there, without disclosing the secret of Prophet Joseph’s identity, would have then been thought out and decided upon.
