📖 Commentary of Surah Yusuf – Verse 29

"Yusuf [Joseph], turn away from this. And [woman], ask forgiveness for your sin. You are indeed among the wrongdoers [62]."

✅ 60. Preservation of Honor

In this verse, Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) is instructed to turn away from the situation, meaning he should not engage further in the matter or allow it to cause any grief. Zuleikha is advised to keep the incident confidential, not relating it to anyone, in order to preserve both Hazrat Yusuf's (on whom be peace) honor and her own reputation. Zuleikha's honor should also be preserved, and she is to keep quiet about the incident and maintain her integrity.

✅ 61. The Apology and Seeking Forgiveness

Zuleikha is told to seek forgiveness for her sin, indicating the importance of repentance in Islam. This could be an apology to Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) or to Allah Almighty for her actions. Seeking forgiveness from both is vital for repentance, as Allah is the ultimate source of mercy and forgiveness.

✅ 62. The Wrongful Accusation and Selfless Love

The verse emphasizes that the intention of sin came from Zuleikha, who had accused Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) despite his innocence. From this, we learn that Zuleikha was not inherently wicked, but her actions were driven by ecstasy of love, akin to the unconscious state in which the women of Egypt cut their hands when gazing upon Hazrat Yusuf's (on whom be peace) beauty.

It is significant that Zuleikha later repented, which is mentioned later in the Surah. This highlights the capacity for repentance and change. Eventually, Zuleikha entered into a marriage with Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace), showing that divine mercy can lead one from mistakes to purification.

✅ The Special Status of a Prophet’s Wife

It is also understood that the wives of Prophets are protected from wickedness and immorality. This is why Allah Almighty used the mild term "culprit" when referring to Zuleikha, indicating that her actions were driven by love and passion rather than malicious intent. This affirms the belief that even those who err may seek redemption and divine mercy if they sincerely repent.
