📖 Commentary of Surah Yusuf – Verse 15

"Then, when they took him away and all agreed to cast him into a dark well [26], We revealed to him that one day he would inform them of what they had done, while they would not be aware [27]."

✅ 26. Hazrat Yusuf’s (on whom be peace) Cruel Treatment

While they were in the sight of Hazrat Yaqoob (on whom be peace), the brothers continued to carry Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) on their shoulders out of love. However, as soon as they were out of sight of their father, they threw Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) to the ground and began to beat him up. To whichever brother he turned, he would be beaten. When their cruelty became excessive, Yahooda intervened, reminding them that they had not agreed to kill him. Hearing this, they stopped the cruel treatment.

✅ 27. The Well and Divine Protection

Thus, they threw Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) into a well that was narrow at the top but spacious at the bottom. At the time of casting him into the well, they took off his shirt and tied both his hands with it, suspending him in the well. When he had descended halfway, Hazrat Jibraeel Amien (on whom be peace) appeared in the well and caught him on his wings. Hazrat Jibraeel then placed the shirt of Hazrat Ebrahim (on whom be peace), which had been worn when he was thrown into the fire by Namrood, on Hazrat Yusuf's neck as a protective Ta'weez. Through the blessings of this shirt, the dark well was illuminated. This well was located nine miles from Canaan, in the territory of Baitul Muqaddas.

✅ 28. Divine Revelation to Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace)

The term revelation here refers to divine inspiration or the words spoken by Hazrat Jibraeel (on whom be peace). At this point, Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) was not yet a Prophet, as revelation is exclusive to Prophets. From this, we learn that the words of Allah’s pious servants, even when spoken by someone like Hazrat Jibraeel, are essentially the words of Allah Almighty. Allah Almighty says: “We have spoken.”

This means that there would come a time when Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) would ascend to the royal throne, and his brothers would come to him as needy people. He would then remind them of the cruel treatment they had subjected him to, and they would be ashamed of their actions.

Ibn-Kathir

15. So, when they took him away, they all agreed to throw him down to the bottom of the well, and We revealed to him: “Indeed, you shall (one day) inform them of this their affair, when they know (you) not.”

Yusuf is thrown in a Well

Allah says that when Yusuf’s brothers took him from his father, after they requested him to permit that,

﴿وَأَجْمَعُواْ أَن يَجْعَلُوهُ فِى غَيَابَةِ الْجُبِّ﴾

(they all agreed to throw him down to the bottom of the well,) This part of the Ayah magnifies their crime, in that it mentions that they all agreed to throw him to the bottom of the well. This was their intent, yet when they took him from his father, they pretended otherwise, so that his father sends him with a good heart and feeling at ease and comfortable with his decision. It was reported that Ya`qub, peace be upon him, embraced Yusuf, kissed him and supplicated to Allah for him when he sent him with his brothers. As-Suddi said that the time spent between pretending to be well-wishers and harming Yusuf was no longer than their straying far from their father’s eyes. They then started abusing Yusuf verbally, by cursing, and harming him by beating. When they reached the well that they agreed to throw him in, they tied him with rope and lowered him down. When Yusuf would beg one of them, he would smack and curse him. When he tried to hold to the sides of the well, they struck his hand and then cut the rope when he was only half the distance from the bottom of the well. He fell into the water and was submerged. However, he was able to ascend a stone that was in the well and stood on it. Allah said next,

﴿وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ لَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُمْ بِأَمْرِهِمْ هَـذَا وَهُمْ لاَ يَشْعُرُونَ﴾

(and We revealed to him: “Indeed, you shall (one day) inform them of this their affair, when they know (you) not. ”) In this Ayah, Allah mentions His mercy and compassion and His compensation and relief that He sends in times of distress. Allah revealed to Yusuf, during that distressful time, in order to comfort his heart and strengthen his resolve, `Do not be saddened by what you have suffered. Surely, you will have a way out of this distress and a good end, for Allah will aid you against them, elevate your rank and raise your grade. Later on, you will remind them of what they did to you,’ i

﴿وَهُمْ لاَ يَشْعُرُونَ﴾

(when they know not.) “Ibn `Abbas commented on this Ayah, “You will remind them of this evil action against you, while they are unaware of your identity and unable to recognize you.”

(12:15) So when they went away with Joseph and decided to cast him in the bottom of the dark pit, We revealed to Joseph: “Surely a time will come when you will remind them of their deed. They know nothing about the consequence of what they are doing.”[12]

Ala-Maududi

(12:15) So when they went away with Joseph and decided to cast him in the bottom of the dark pit, We revealed to Joseph: “Surely a time will come when you will remind them of their deed. They know nothing about the consequence of what they are doing.”[12]

12. The Arabic words “they do not perceive” may very appropriately mean three things. First, We were comforting Joseph, and his brothers were quite unaware of this that a revelation was being sent to him. Second, you will let them know of this evil act of theirs in such circumstances that they can never even imagine you to be there. Third, today they are committing an evil act, but they do not know its future consequences.

There is no mention of this in the Bible and the Talmud that Allah sent a revelation to comfort Prophet Joseph at that time of his affliction. On the contrary, the Talmud says that when he was thrown into the well, Prophet Joseph wept and cried aloud and implored his brothers for mercy, as if he was no better than any other lad of the desert, who would weep and cry if he were to be thrown into a well. But the picture the Quran depicts is that of a young man, who is destined to play the part of a great personality in history.

(15) So when they took him [out] and agreed to put him into the bottom of the well...[587] But We inspired to him, "You will surely inform them [someday] about this affair of theirs while they do not perceive [your identity]."

[587]- The conclusion of this sentence is estimated to be "...they tormented him."
