Transliteration:( Wa maa ubarri'u nafsee; innan nafsa la ammaaratum bissooo'i illaa maa rahima Rabbee; inna Rabbee Ghafoorur Raheem )
"And I do not acquit myself [118]. Indeed, the soul is prone to evil except for those on whom my Lord has mercy [119]. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and merciful."
Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) expresses his humility before Allah Almighty, acknowledging that his chastity and resistance to Zuleikha's advances were not due to his own perfection but as a result of Allah's mercy and guidance. He humbly admits that he does not acquit himself of being prone to error. This teaches us that we should never boast about our good deeds or attribute them to our own abilities, but instead be grateful to Allah for granting us the guidance and strength to do good.
The Human Soul’s Baser Nature:
The human self is naturally inclined toward evil, so we should never be complacent or proud of our actions. This reminds us to remain humble and always seek Allah’s guidance to protect us from sin.
Purity of the Prophets:
The Prophets are pure and sinless, as they are included in the phrase, "on whom my Lord has mercy." Their souls and passions are not inclined to evil like the rest of humanity. The Devil has no control over them, as Allah says, "No doubt those who are My bondsmen, you have no control over them" (S17:V65). This is why Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) did not say that his soul was of baser nature, because Prophets are divinely protected from such inclinations.

Please refer to Surah Yusuf ayat 50 which provides the complete commentary from verse 50 through 53.
(12:53) I do not seek to acquit myself; for surely one’s self prompts one to evil except him to whom my Lord may show mercy. Verily my Lord is Ever Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
There is no commentary by Abul Maududi available for this verse.
[601]- Although Ibn Katheer attributes the words of verses 52-53 to the wife of al-ʿAzeez, others have concluded that they were spoken by Joseph, thereby justifying his request for an inquiry and acknowledging Allāh's mercy to him.
