📖 Commentary of Surah Yusuf – Verse 82

And enquire of the town where we were [176], and the caravan in which we came. Indeed, we are truthful [177]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

✅ 176. Usage of the Word "Qaryah"

This verse shows that in Arabic, the word Qaryah is used for a city as well. The brothers referred to Egypt—a major urban center—as Qaryah, indicating that the term is not limited to villages.

  • This interpretation clarifies why Jumu'ah (Friday) prayers, which according to Islamic law are not valid in villages, are permissible in places referred to as Qaryah when that word denotes a city or town.

  • It is a linguistic point that supports rulings based on Quranic word usage.

✅ 177. Assurance of Truthfulness

The brothers added this point because they knew their father might suspect them due to their previous dishonesty regarding Yusuf.

  • Hence they said: "Ask the people of Egypt for the truth."

  • This reflects the Islamic value that one should always speak the truth, so that one’s credibility is not lost during times of genuine honesty.

  • It also shows the principle of bringing external witnesses or references when one fears their testimony may not be trusted.
