Transliteration:( Wa tawallaa 'anhum wa qaala yaaa asafaa 'alaa Yoosufa wabyaddat 'aynaahu minal huzni fahuwa kazeem )
And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, how great is my grief for Yusuf!" His eyes became white with sorrow, and he was deeply distressed [180]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)
Permissibility of Grieving and Weeping
This verse clearly shows that weeping at the separation of a beloved is permissible. Hazrat Ya’qoob (عليه السلام) expressed sorrow for Yusuf (عليه السلام) and continued to grieve over his loss for many years.
Prophets Can Lose Their Sight
The loss of eyesight experienced by Hazrat Ya’qoob (عليه السلام) was a result of excessive crying. He cried for approximately eighty years, as per various narrations.
However, this blindness was not permanent. When Hazrat Yusuf's (عليه السلام) shirt was later placed on his eyes, his vision was restored, as affirmed in the verse:
"His sight came back" (Surah Yusuf, Ayah 96)
Similarly, Hazrat Shu'ayb (عليه السلام) is also reported to have lost his eyesight due to intense crying out of fear of Allah.
Spiritual Meaning Behind the Lamentation
Although the apparent reason for Hazrat Ya’qoob’s lamentation was separation from Yusuf, inwardly it stemmed from his deep love for Allah Almighty.
As mentioned in Tafseer Roohul Bayaan, the earthly love for his son became a means to attain Divine Love.
Moreover, he knew Yusuf was alive and trusted Allah would reunite them, as shown in his previous statement: “Perhaps Allah will bring them all to me.”
84.And he turned away from them and said, Oh, my sorrow over Joseph, and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.
(12:84) Then he turned his back to them, and said: “O my grief for Joseph!” His eyes whitened with grief and he was choked up with sorrow trying to suppress his grief.
There is no commentary by Abul Maududi available for this verse.
[614]- i.e., he lost his sight. [615]- He did not express the extent of his grief or his anger at what he suspected his sons had done but was patient, depending only upon Allāh for help.
