13. So, for their breaking of the covenant [62], We cursed them and made their hearts hard [63]. They distort the words of Allah from their [proper] places [64] and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded. And you will continue to be told of their treachery on their part, except a few of them. So, pardon them and overlook them [65]. Indeed, Allah loves the doers of good. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(13) So for their breaking of the covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hardened. They distort words from their [proper] places [i.e., usages] and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded.[248] And you will still observe deceit among them, except a few of them. But pardon them and overlook [their misdeeds]. Indeed, Allāh loves the doers of good. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Verse 13 – Surah Al-Ma’idah

So, for their breaking of the covenant [62], We cursed them and made their hearts hard [63]. They distort the words of Allah from their [proper] places [64] and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded. And you will continue to be told of their treachery on their part, except a few of them. So, pardon them and overlook them [65]. Indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

✅ Breaking of the Covenant and Resulting Curse [62]

These people not only rejected the Prophets after Hazrat Moosa (Moses), but also harbored animosity against them and concealed the praiseworthy qualities of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, as mentioned in the Tauraat (Torah).

✅ Hardness of Heart Due to Sinning [63]

From this, we learn that a cruel (hard) heart is a result of committing many sins, while piety develops a soft heart.

✅ Distortion of Allah’s Words is a Serious Sin [64]

Distorting the words of the Book of Allah is a grave sin, whether done personally or in a qualitative sense. Intentionally mispronouncing any word of the QURAN—for example, pronouncing the letter Qaaf as Kaaf, or Dwaad as Zwa—is considered a serious sin.

✅ Pardoning Minor Breaches of Promise [65]

If any Non-Muslim living in a Muslim state is guilty of a minor breach of promise, he should be forgiven, as long as he continues to pay Jizyah (poll tax). However, there are breaches from which one is relieved from responsibilities. Some commentators state this verse was revealed concerning those who had earlier entered into a contract with the Holy Prophet ﷺ and then broke it. Allah Almighty informed His beloved Prophet ﷺ about what would be done regarding their breach of promise and instructed to overlook it. (Tafseer Khazain)

Please refer to Surah Maidah ayat 12 which provides the complete commentary from verse 12 through 14.

(5:13) Then, for their breach of the covenant We cast them away from Our mercy and caused their hearts to harden. (And now they are in such a state that) they pervert the words from their context and thus distort their meaning, and have forgotten a good portion of the teaching they were imparted, and regarding all except a few of them you continue to learn that they committed acts of treachery. Pardon them, then, and overlook their deeds. Surely Allah loves those who do good deeds.
