📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Verse 23 – Surah Al-Ma’idah

Two men from among those who feared Allah, whom Allah had favoured [86], said: Enter upon them through the gate, for if you enter it, you will surely be victorious [87]. And put your trust in Allah, if you are believers [88].

✅ The Two Fearful and Favoured Men [86]

Among these two men, one was Kaalib Ibn Yuqanna, the brother-in-law of Hazrat Musa (on whom be peace), husband of Mariam, daughter of Imran. The other was Yusha Ibn Noon, son of Faratheen Ibn Yusuf (on whom be peace), who had earlier refused to give information about the Jabbareen. Both were men who feared Allah deeply and were favoured by Him.

✅ Knowledge of the Unseen and Divine Blessings [87]

This verse indicates that Allah blesses His auspicious saints with knowledge of the Unseen. Both Kaalib and Yusha were such saints, granted insight into matters hidden from others, guiding the people toward victory.

✅ Trust in Allah Over Numerical Strength [88]

From this, we understand that success and victory do not depend on numerical strength. Allah’s will is supreme; He can, for instance, destroy mighty elephants through tiny swallows. Therefore, trusting Allah is essential for true belief and triumph.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Maidah verse 23 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Maidah ayat 20 which provides the complete commentary from verse 20 through 26.

(5:23) Two from among these who were frightened but upon whom Allah had bes-towed His favour[45] said: ‘Enter upon them through the gate – for if you do enter – you will be the victors. And put your trust in Allah if indeed you are men of faith.’

Ala-Maududi

(5:23) Two from among these who were frightened but upon whom Allah had bes-towed His favour[45] said: ‘Enter upon them through the gate – for if you do enter – you will be the victors. And put your trust in Allah if indeed you are men of faith.’

45. This could have two meanings: either that two of those who feared the high-handed people of the Promised Land made that statement or that two of those who feared God did so. (However, most Qur’anic commentators subscribe to the latter meaning – Ed.)

(23) Said two men from those who feared [to disobey] upon whom Allāh had bestowed favor, "Enter upon them through the gate, for when you have entered it, you will be predominant.[254] And upon Allāh rely, if you should be believers."

[254]- i.e., If you obey the command of Allāh trusting in Him, He will fulfill His promise to you.
