Transliteration:( laqad kafaral lazeena qaalooo innal laaha saalisu salaasah; wa maa min ilaahin illaaa Ilaahunw Waahid; wa illam yantahoo 'ammaa yaqooloona layamas sannal lazeena kafaroo minhum 'azaabun aleem )
73. Indeed, those are infidels who say: "Allah is the third of three" [219]. There is no god but the one God. And if they do not cease from what they are saying, those who disbelieve among them will surely be afflicted with a painful punishment [220].
Certain Christian sects, such as the Marcosians and Nastooriyas, hold the belief that Allah is part of a trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. According to their belief, the Trinity consists of God the Father, Hazrat Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) as the Son, and Hazrat Jibraeel (Gabriel) as the Holy Spirit. This forms the concept of the Trinity in their doctrine.
This verse warns that all who maintain this belief of polytheism or shirk until death are deserving of severe punishment. However, final verification of a person's faith is determined at the time of death. Therefore, repentance and turning back to true monotheism must be swift and sincere to avoid this dire fate. This sets the stage for the subsequent verses emphasizing repentance.
