📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Verse 16 – Surah Al-Ma’idah

Allah guides therewith [70], him who pursues His pleasures into the ways of peace, and brings them to light from the darkness [71], by His Command and shows the right path [72].
(Kanzul Imaan Translation)

✅ Guidance Through the Holy Prophet ﷺ [70]

  • This verse teaches that those who are rightly guided are guided through the Holy Prophet ﷺ.

  • No one can remain aloof or detached from the Prophet ﷺ if they seek true guidance.

  • Therefore, the use of the phrase “guides therewith him” refers to the necessity of following the Holy Prophet ﷺ as the channel of divine guidance.

✅ Faith as Light, Apostasy as Darkness [71]

Several important insights emerge from the use of “light” and “darkness”:

  1. Apostasy (kufr) is of many types, while faith (iman) is one unified truth. This is why “darkness” appears in the plural form (ظلمات), while “light” is in the singular (نور).

  2. True faith requires total separation from every form of disbelief and falsehood.

  3. Faith and disbelief cannot coexist—just as light and darkness are opposites. This affirms that there can be no basis of unity between a believer and a non-believer in spiritual terms.

✅ Allah’s Guidance to Pious Deeds [72]

  • The phrase “shows the right path” indicates that Allah not only brings about belief but also guides believers towards righteous actions.

  • Since belief was already mentioned earlier in the verse, this part emphasizes guidance in practical deeds—i.e., living a life of righteousness after accepting faith.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Maidah verse 16 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Maidah ayat 15 which provides the complete commentary from verse 15 through 16.

(5:16) through which Allah shows to all who seek to please Him the paths leading to safety.[38] He brings them out, by His leave, from darkness to light and directs them on to the straight way.

Ala-Maududi

(5:16) through which Allah shows to all who seek to please Him the paths leading to safety.[38] He brings them out, by His leave, from darkness to light and directs them on to the straight way.

38. The word ‘safety’ here denotes safety from false perception and outlook, safety from misdeeds and their consequences. Whoever seeks guidance from the Book of God and from the example of the Messenger (peace be on him) can find out how to keep himself safe from errors at each of life’s crossroads.

(16) By which Allāh guides those who pursue His pleasure to the ways of peace[252] and brings them out from darknesses into the light, by His permission, and guides them to a straight path.

[252]- i.e., security, well-being, integrity and escape from Hellfire. Literally, "freedom from all evil."
