“And the believers say: ‘Are these the same people who swore by Allah in their strongest oaths that they were with you? Their deeds have been destroyed [170], and they have become losers.’”
This verse highlights that professed piety paired with hypocrisy leads to the nullification of good deeds. Outward acts of worship performed by hypocrites—such as Salaah (prayer), fasting, Zakaat, and Hajj—are neither truly valid nor rewarded in the Hereafter because they lack sincere faith.
It does not imply that their deeds were once correct but later invalidated; rather, their hypocrisy renders these deeds ineffective from the start.
Additionally, the verse teaches that Muslims must remain distinct from disbelievers in behavior and appearance and avoid imitating their customs or mannerisms.

(5:53) while those who believe will exclaim: ‘Are these the self-same people who solemnly swore by Allah that they were with you?’ All their acts have gone to waste and now they are the losers.[86]
86. However much they might profess to follow Islam – by performing Prayers, by observing Fasts, by paying Zakah, by taking part in wars in the cause of God – all was reduced to naught because they had not devoted themselves to the service of the One True God. In pursuit of their worldly ambitions they had split their souls into two, distributing half to God and half to those in rebellion against Him.
