📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Verse 36 – Surah Al-Ma’idah

Indeed, those who became [119] infidels, if they possessed all that is in the earth and as much more again to ransom themselves thereby from the punishment of the Day of Judgment, it shall not be accepted from [120] them, and for them is a painful punishment.

✅ The Meaning of Becoming Infidels [119]

This refers to those who rejected the Holy Prophet ﷺ, which is a fundamental form of apostasy. Since rejection of the Prophet inevitably entails rejection of Allah Almighty, their disbelief places them outside the fold of true faith. This verse is placed immediately after the verse emphasizing mediation through the Prophet and saints, highlighting the severe consequence of rejecting such means.

✅ The Futility of Worldly Wealth on the Day of Judgment [120]

Even if the disbelievers offered all the wealth of the earth and more as ransom, it would not be accepted to save them from the punishment of the Hereafter. This shows that material wealth is powerless to atone for disbelief and rejection of divine truth.

In contrast, the charity and good deeds of the believers are accepted and can alleviate their punishment, thus highlighting the spiritual value of sincere faith and righteous action over mere worldly possessions.
