📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Ma’idah – Verse 63

63. Why do their clergymen and priests not forbid [188] them from speaking sinful words and consuming what is forbidden? How wretched is what they have been practicing.

✅ [188] Responsibility of Religious Scholars

This verse teaches that religious scholars (clergymen and priests) will be held accountable for sins they see committed but fail to stop, especially if they have the power to do so.

It is the duty of an ʿĀlim (religious scholar) to protect both themselves and others from wrongdoing by forbidding sinful speech and actions.

Moreover, it is incumbent upon religious scholars to actively propagate Islam — whether through speaking, writing, or personal conduct.
