Transliteration:( Wa anih kum bainahum bimaaa anzalal laahu wa laa tattabi' ahwaaa'ahum wahzarhum ai yaftinooka 'am ba'di maaa anzalal laahu ilaika fa in tawallaw fa'lam annamaa yureedul laahu ai yuseebahum biba'di zunoobihim; wa inna kaseeram minan naasi lafaasiqoon )

49. And (O Muslims) judge between them by what Allah has sent down [160], and do not follow their desires, and beware of them, lest they cause you to deviate from any of what Allah has revealed to you. And if they turn away, then know that Allah intends to punish them for some of their sins. Indeed, many people are transgressors [161]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(49) And judge, [O Muḥammad], between them by what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations and beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allāh has revealed to you. And if they turn away - then know that Allāh only intends to afflict them with some of their [own] sins. And indeed, many among the people are defiantly disobedient. 📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Verse 49 – Surah Al-Ma’idah

Judging by What Allah Has Revealed [160]

“And (O Muslims) judge between them by what Allah has sent down…”

  • This includes the Qur’an, Hadith Shareef, consensus (ijma) of the Muslim community, and analogical reasoning (qiyas).

  • The Qur’an is the clear and primary revelation, while the Hadith is a more concealed form of divine guidance.

  • Following the consensus of the Ummah is commanded in the Qur’an, and analogical reasoning serves as a method to apply divine rulings in new circumstances.

Avoid Following Their Desires

“…and do not follow their desires…”

  • Judges and believers are warned not to follow the personal whims or desires of others that conflict with Allah’s revelation.

  • Such desires may cause deviation from the truth and lead to error in judgment and practice.

Beware of Their Influence

“…and beware of them, lest they cause you to deviate from any of what Allah has revealed to you.”

  • Believers should be cautious of the wiles and deceptive tactics of disbelievers and hypocrites, which may lead one away from divine guidance.

  • Even the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was cautioned against such influences, highlighting the seriousness of the warning.

Consequences of Turning Away

“And if they turn away, then know that Allah intends to punish them for some of their sins.”

  • Those who reject the truth deliberately face Allah’s punishment as a consequence of their transgressions.

  • The verse reminds us that many people are transgressors by ignoring or opposing divine laws.

Reminder of Human Vulnerability [161-162]

  • No one should consider themselves immune to the deception of enemies or the whispers of Satan.

  • If the Prophet was warned, it is all the more essential for ordinary believers to remain vigilant.

  • Following whims contrary to Shariah’s laws is a sign of impending divine punishment.

  • True devotion and success require sincere adherence to Allah’s revealed guidance, not personal desires.

Please refer to Surah Maidah ayat 48 which provides the complete commentary from verse 48 through 50.

(5:49) Therefore, judge bet-ween them (O Muhammad!)[82] by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their desires, and beware lest they tempt you away from anything of what Allah has revealed to you. And if they turn away, then know well that Allah has indeed decided to afflict them for some of their sins. For surely many of them are transgressors.

Ala-Maududi

(5:49) Therefore, judge bet-ween them (O Muhammad!)[82] by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their desires, and beware lest they tempt you away from anything of what Allah has revealed to you. And if they turn away, then know well that Allah has indeed decided to afflict them for some of their sins. For surely many of them are transgressors.

82. Following this parenthetical clause, the previous subject is resumed.
