The Destruction of Mountains on Judgement Day

This verse illustrates the catastrophic events of Judgement Day. The frightening and pulsating sound of the First Trumpet will cause the mighty and colorful mountains to disintegrate into tiny particles. These particles, resembling the fibers of colorful wool being combed, will scatter and fly in the air. The imagery emphasizes the overwhelming power of Allah and the total destruction of the strongest and most stable structures on earth. It signifies that no element, no matter how grand, will remain intact in the face of Allah's command.

Ala-Maududi

(101:5) and the mountains shall be like fluffs of carded wool in varying colours.[2]

2. This will be the first stage of Resurrection, when in consequence of the great disaster the whole of the present order of the world will be overthrown; the people will then be running about in confusion and bewilderment like so many scattered moths around a light; and the mountains will be flying about like carded wool of different colors. The mountains have been compared to wool of different colors because of the existence of a variety of colors in them

(5) And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.[1976]

[1976]- i.e., beginning to disintegrate.
