📖 Commentary of Surah As-Saffaat – Verse 144

"He would have surely remained in its belly until the day when the people shall be resurrected [146]."

✅ [146] The Possibility of Prolonged Life

Had Hazrat Yunus (peace be upon him) not engaged in glorifying Allah, he would have remained alive in the belly of the fish until the Day of Resurrection—a situation where neither he nor the fish would die.

This implies two important lessons:

  1. On the Day of Judgement, there will be no death, only eternal life.

  2. This verse shows that immortality is possible if Allah so wills.

Therefore, we learn that nothing is impossible for Allah Almighty—He grants life and death as He pleases, and can suspend natural laws for the sake of His chosen servants.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah As-Saffat verse 144 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Saffat ayat 139 which provides the complete commentary from verse 139 through 148.

(37:144) he would certainly have remained in its belly till the Day of Resurrection.[81]

Ala-Maududi

(37:144) he would certainly have remained in its belly till the Day of Resurrection.[81]

81. This does not mean that the fish would have lived till Resurrection and the Prophet Jonah (peace be upon him) would have remained alive in its belly till then, but that the fish’s belly would have become his grave till Resurrection. The famous commentator Qatadah has given this same meaning of this verse. (Ibn Jarir).

(144) He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.[1304]

[1304]- Meaning that the belly of the fish would have become his grave.
