📖 Commentary of Surah As-Saffaat – Verse 37

"Nay indeed [38], rather he has brought the truth and he has confirmed all the previous Messengers [39]. You are deserving of the punishment."

✅ [38] The Prophet Brought Truth, Not Poetry

This means that the Holy Prophet ﷺ did not speak poetry, but instead spoke the truth.

From this we learn that in Qur'anic usage, "poetry" is used as a symbol for falsehood, i.e., the opposite of truth, not literal poems.

Thus, the Prophet ﷺ was being falsely accused, while in reality, he was the bearer of divine truth.

✅ [39] Confirmation of Previous Prophets

This also means that the Holy Prophet ﷺ affirmed the truthfulness of all the previous Prophets, because all of them had prophesied his coming, and he, in turn, validated their message.

Or, it may mean that the Holy Prophet ﷺ explicitly confirmed each one of them as true messengers, and taught the Ummah to honor and believe in all of them.

Observe: only those Prophets gained universal recognition who were illuminated through the testimony of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah As-Saffat verse 37 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Saffat ayat 27 which provides the complete commentary from verse 27 through 37.

(37:37) (They say so although) he brought the Truth and confirmed the veracity of the Messengers.[21]

Ala-Maududi

(37:37) (They say so although) he brought the Truth and confirmed the veracity of the Messengers.[21]

21. Confirmation of the Messengers has three meanings and all the three are implied here.

(1) That he had not opposed any former Messenger so that the believers of that Messenger could have a rational ground of prejudice against him; he had rather confirmed all the former Messengers sent by God.

(2) That he had not brought any new or novel thing, but he had presented the same that the former Messengers of God had been presenting from the very beginning.

(3) That he truly fulfilled and corresponded to the predictions that the former Messengers had made concerning him.

(37) Rather, he [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.
