Transliteration:( Wa ambatnaa 'alaihi shajaratam mai yaqteen )
"And We caused to grow over him a plant of gourd [149]."
Allah caused a gourd plant to grow over Hazrat Yunus (peace be upon him), providing him with shade and relief during his recovery.
The gourd plant’s shade is dense, offering coolness and comfort. It has soft shrubs and requires very little soil, making it ideal for barren places. Some scholars note that pumpkin dishes are blessed, and the Holy Prophet ﷺ and his Companions loved pumpkin dishes.
This particular gourd plant grew upright, not spreading on the ground like typical vines, allowing Hazrat Yunus to rest comfortably beneath its shade.
By Divine command, every day a goat would come to provide milk for him, helping him regain strength.
Once he recovered and his hair began to grow, Hazrat Yunus returned to his people, rejuvenated and ready to continue his prophetic mission.

83. The Arabic word yaqteen applies to a tree which does not stand on a stem but grows and spreads like a creeper, e.g. a pumpkin, cucumber, water-melon, etc. In any case, a creeper was produced miraculously, so that its leaves should provide shade to the Prophet Jonah and its fruit should serve him both as food and as shade.
[1305]- Which is known to give cooling shade and to be a repellent of flies.
