The summary/theme of the surah Luqman:

 Luqman, a wise man who dispenses advice to his son in verses 12-19, gives the surah its name. According to the verse, those who follow Shirk are blindly following their forefathers. To be wise, one must believe in Allah. The verse reiterates one's gratitude and obedience to one's parents. 

Lesson learned from surah Luqman:

  1. Those who try to divert the attention of people from the Book of Allāh shall receive a painful punishment.  
  2. Ponder over the favours of Allāh and show gratitude.  
  3. Whoever is grateful to Allāh only benefits him/herself, whilst whoever is ungrateful, Allāh is independent of his gratitude.  
  4. Shirk is the greatest oppression.  
  5. Do good to your parents who went through great difficulties in bringing you up.  
  6. Even if they tell you to commit shirk, don’t obey them, but still be courteous to them.  
  7. Nothing escapes the knowledge of Allāh.  
  8. Be patient upon afflictions.  
  9. Don’t walk arrogantly.  
  10. Don’t raise your voice unnecessarily.  
  11. Only Allāh has knowledge of 5 things:  
  12. The time of the Hour  
  13. Of rainfall  
  14. Of what in in the wombs  
  15. What will happen tomorrow  
  16. Where people will die.

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

 

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱلۡفُلۡكَ تَجۡرِي فِي ٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِنِعۡمَتِ ٱللَّهِ لِيُرِيَكُم مِّنۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦٓۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَٰتٖ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارٖ شَكُورٖ

Transliteration:( Alam tara annal fulka tajree fil bahri bini'matil laahi li yuriyakum min Aayaatih; inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil likulli sabbaarin shakoor )
31.Have you not seen the boats move in the river by the Grace (67) of Allah, that He may show some of His Signs (68)? Undoubtedly, in it are signs for everyone who is patient and grateful (69).

وَإِذَا غَشِيَهُم مَّوۡجٞ كَٱلظُّلَلِ دَعَوُاْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡبَرِّ فَمِنۡهُم مُّقۡتَصِدٞۚ وَمَا يَجۡحَدُ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِلَّا كُلُّ خَتَّارٖ كَفُورٖ

Transliteration:( Wa izaa ghashiyahum mawjun kazzulali da'a-wul laaha mukhliseena lahud deena fa lammaa najjaahum ilal barri faminhum muqtasid; wa maa yajhadu bi Aayaatinaa illaa kullu khattaarin kafoor )
32.But when any wave befalls them like mountains, then they call upon Allah having pure faith (70) in Him. But when He brings them safe towards land, then some of them keep to the middle course (71). And none shall deny Our Signs except a deceiving and ungrateful person.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ وَٱخۡشَوۡاْ يَوۡمٗا لَّا يَجۡزِي وَالِدٌ عَن وَلَدِهِۦ وَلَا مَوۡلُودٌ هُوَ جَازٍ عَن وَالِدِهِۦ شَيۡـًٔاۚ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقّٞۖ فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَلَا يَغُرَّنَّكُم بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡغَرُورُ

Transliteration:( Yaaa ayyuhan naasuttaqoo Rabbakum wakhshaw Yawmal laa yajzee waalidun 'anw waladihee wa laa mawloodun huwa jaazin 'anw waalidihee shai'aa; innaa wa'dal laahi haqqun falaa taghurran nakumul hayaatud dunyaa wa laa yaghur rannakum billaahil gharoor )
33.0 people! Fear Allah (72), your Lord and have apprehension of the day when neither a father will be of any benefit to his son, nor any affectionate son will be able to provide and benefit (73) to his father. Undoubtedly, the promise of Allah is true (74). Therefore, let not the life of this world deceive (75) you concerning Allah.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡغَيۡثَ وَيَعۡلَمُ مَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡحَامِۖ وَمَا تَدۡرِي نَفۡسٞ مَّاذَا تَكۡسِبُ غَدٗاۖ وَمَا تَدۡرِي نَفۡسُۢ بِأَيِّ أَرۡضٖ تَمُوتُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرُۢ

Transliteration:( Innal laaha 'indahoo 'ilmus saa'ati wa yunazzilul ghaisa wa ya'lamu maa fil arhaami wa maa tadree nafsum maazaa taksibu ghadaa; wa maa tadree nafsum bi ayyi ardin tamoot; innal laaha 'Aleemun Khabeer (section 4) )
34. Surely. with Allah is the knowledge of the Hour (of Doomsday) and He sends down rain (76) and knows what is in the wombs of mothers, and no soul knows what (77) it will carry tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land (78) it will die. Undoubtedly, Allah is the All-Knowing. All Aware.
