The summary/theme of the surah Luqman:

Luqman, a wise man who dispenses advice to his son in verses 12-19, gives the surah its name. According to the verse, those who follow Shirk are blindly following their forefathers. To be wise, one must believe in Allah. The verse reiterates one's gratitude and obedience to one's parents.

Lesson learned from surah Luqman:

  1. Those who try to divert the attention of people from the Book of Allāh shall receive a painful punishment.
  2. Ponder over the favours of Allāh and show gratitude.
  3. Whoever is grateful to Allāh only benefits him/herself, whilst whoever is ungrateful, Allāh is independent of his gratitude.
  4. Shirk is the greatest oppression.
  5. Do good to your parents who went through great difficulties in bringing you up.
  6. Even if they tell you to commit shirk, don’t obey them, but still be courteous to them.
  7. Nothing escapes the knowledge of Allāh.
  8. Be patient upon afflictions.
  9. Don’t walk arrogantly.
  10. Don’t raise your voice unnecessarily.
  11. Only Allāh has knowledge of 5 things:
  12. The time of the Hour
  13. Of rainfall
  14. Of what in in the wombs
  15. What will happen tomorrow
  16. Where people will die.

Transliteration:( Wa izaa qeela lahumut-tabi'oo maaa anzalal laahu qaaloo bal nattabi'u maa wajadnaa 'alaihi aabaaa'anaa; awalaw kaanash Shaitaanu yad'oohum ilaa 'azaabis sa'eer )

21.And when it is said to them: "Follow (47) what Allah has revealed". Then they say: "We shall follow that on which we found (48) our fathers". What? Even though the Shaitaan may be inviting them towards the punishment of the burning fire (49).

23. And whoso disbelieves, let not his infidelity grieve(53) you. To Him is their return. Then We shall tell them what they used to do. Surely, Allah knows what is inside the breasts.

Transliteration:( Numatti'uhum qaleelan summa nadtarruhum ilaa 'azaabin ghaleez )

24.We shall allow them to enjoy a little(54), then making them helpless. We shall drive them towards severe punishment (55).

Transliteration:( Wa la'in sa altahum man khalaqas samaawaati wal arda la yaqoolunnal laah; qulil hamdu lillaah; bal aksaruhum laa ya'lamoon )

25.And if you ask them who has created the heavens and the earth, they will surely say (57): "Allah". Please declare: "All praise belongs to Allah". But most of them do not know(58)

Transliteration:( Alam tara annal laaha yoolijul laila fin nahaari wa yoolijun nahaara fil laili wa sakhkharash shamsa wal qamara kulluny yajreee ilaaa ajalim musammanw wa annal laaha bimaa ta'maloona Khabeer )
