Transliteration:( Afahasibtum annamaa khalaqnaakum 'abasanw wa annakum ilainaa laa turja'oon )
“Do you then think that We created you in vain and that you would not be returned to Us?” [157–158]
Allah asks rhetorically: “Did you assume your existence has no purpose?”
This challenges those who live heedlessly, as if life were without divine accountability.
Our true purpose is worship and submission to Allah — life is not a game or random.
The verse reminds all people — especially those who deny the Hereafter or neglect preparation for it — that a return to Allah is inevitable.
Whether one denies the Resurrection like polytheists or believes but remains heedless like some People of the Book, everyone will face divine judgment.
The tafsir of Surah Al-Muminun verse 115 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Muminun ayat 112 which provides the complete commentary from verse 112 through 116.
(23:115) Did you imagine that We created you without any purpose,[102] and that you will not be brought back to Us?”
102. The Arabic word abathan in the text also means “for the sake of sport”. Then the verse will mean: Did you think that We had created you merely for the sake of sport and there was no purpose behind your creation? Therefore you may eat, drink, be merry and enjoy yourself as you please.
