Transliteration:( Qaaloo labisnaa yawman aw ba'da yawmin fas'alil 'aaaddeen )
“They said, ‘We stayed for a day or part of a day, so ask those who count.’” [154]
On the Day of Judgement, the disbelievers will perceive worldly life as fleeting, like a single day or less.
This is either due to the shock of the afterlife, or
because compared to eternity, even decades on earth feel like moments.
When they say, “Ask those who count”, they refer to the recording angels, who:
Document every second of life and every deed,
and will testify to the truth of their time on earth.
The verse reflects their regret and helplessness in trying to justify their failure to act.
