📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Mu’minoon – Verse 83

"Indeed, this was promised to us and before us [119] to our forefathers. This is not the same as former fables."

✅ [119] Dismissal of Revelation as Old Legends

This verse captures the arrogant dismissal made by certain disbelievers who, despite believing in the existence of Allah, denied the resurrection and the Hereafter.

They say, “This promise of resurrection was made to us and even to our forefathers,” implying that since it hasn’t happened yet, it must be false. They label the message as nothing more than "former fables"—stories of the past with no truth in them.

This statement does not conflict with the views of atheists mentioned elsewhere in the Qur'an, such as in Surah Al-Jathiyah (45:24) where some said, “Nothing destroys us except time.” The difference in tone simply reflects the variety of disbelief:

  • Some rejected the Hereafter while believing in Allah,

  • Others denied both God and resurrection.

This verse represents the first group, and there is no contradiction in the Qur'an when these distinctions are understood.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Muminun verse 83 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Muminun ayat 76 which provides the complete commentary from verse 76 through 83.

(23:83) We were promised such things and so were our forefathers before us. All these are no more than tales of the past.”[77]

Ala-Maududi

(23:83) We were promised such things and so were our forefathers before us. All these are no more than tales of the past.”[77]

77. Their denial of the life after death implied the denial of the powers and wisdom of Allah as well.

(83) We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples."
