    📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Mu’minoon – Verse 77

    "Until when We opened on them the door of any severe torment [112], now that they are lying despaired therein."

    ✅ [112] The Inevitability of Future Punishment

    This verse describes the moment when divine punishment becomes undeniable and overwhelming. The phrase “We opened on them the door of any severe torment” suggests a sudden and inescapable affliction—whether it be:

    • The torment at the time of death,

    • The punishment of the grave, or

    • Future worldly defeats (such as the Muslim victories over disbelievers, which served as punishment for their rejection).

    Though the exact reference is left open, it is clear that these are destined punishments, tied to the certainty of divine justice. Since this verse is Makkan, it does not necessarily relate to Badr, but rather to the general and unavoidable punishment that awaits persistent disbelievers.

    The ending phrase—“lying despaired therein”—shows that once this torment begins, there is no hope left for those who arrogantly rejected the truth. They fall into a state of utter despair, having finally realized the consequences of their defiance.

    73. The Arabic word mublis is used for one whom frustration makes so desperate and obdurate that he does not hesitate to resort to any crime. The Devil has been called Iblis for the same reason.
