📖 Commentary of Surah Maryam – Verse 26

"Then eat and drink and cool your eyes [40]; and if you see any man, say [41], ‘I have vowed a fast to the Most Merciful [42], so I shall not speak to anyone today.’ [43]" (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

✅ [40] Comfort Through Food, Drink, and Her Blessed Child

This means: Eat the dates, drink the stream water, and find peace and joy through this beautiful son of yours.
From this, it is established that calling a child “the comfort of one’s eyes” is from the Qur'an.

✅ [41] Communication Through Signs

This means: If anyone questions you, then respond through gestures, since at that time speaking during a silent fast was prohibited.
She was to indicate through signs that she cannot speak due to a vow of silence.

✅ [42] Fasting from Speech

This means: "Today I have taken a vow of silence for the sake of the Most Merciful."
It is important to note that Bibi Maryam had already eaten and drunk before Fajr, and the fast was only to avoid food and speech during the day.

This was not deception, but rather a divinely ordained instruction.

✅ [43] The Practice of Silent Fasting in Earlier Shariah

The fast of silence existed in previous laws, but it has been abrogated in the current Shariah.
The phrase "then say" implies responding through signs, not actual speech—because otherwise the fast would be invalidated.

This also teaches that silence can be the best response to ignorant or hostile people.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Maryam verse 26 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Maryam ayat 24 which provides the complete commentary from verse 24 through 26.

(19:26) So eat and drink and cool your eyes; and if you see any person say to him: ‘Verily I have vowed a fast to the Most Compassionate Lord, and so I shall not speak to anyone today.’ “[18]

Ala-Maududi

(19:26) So eat and drink and cool your eyes; and if you see any person say to him: ‘Verily I have vowed a fast to the Most Compassionate Lord, and so I shall not speak to anyone today.’ “[18]

18. That is, you need not say anything with regard to the child. It is now Our responsibility to answer the critics. This also indicates why Mary was so sad and grieved. Had she been married and given birth to her first baby like any other mother, there was no occasion to tell her to observe a fast of silence, though it was a common custom among the Jews.

(26) So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.'"
