📖 Commentary of Surah Maryam – Verse 5

"And I fear my relatives after me [6], and my wife is barren [7], so grant me from Yourself an heir [8]." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

✅ [6] Concern for Religious Continuity

That my uncle's sons (cousins) after me would distort the religion, because they were among the worst people of the Israelites (Tafseer Khazainul Irfaan, Roohul Ma‘ani).
In short, this dua is for a religious purpose, not a worldly one.

✅ [7] His Wife’s Barrenness and Family Ties

His wife’s name was Isha bint Faqooz, the sister of Hanna—who was the mother of Bibi Mariam.
Thus, she was the maternal aunt of Bibi Mariam, and Hazrat Zakariya was her maternal uncle.
At that point in time, Hazrat Isha was over seventy years old.

✅ [8] Prophetic Sunnah of Praying for a Son

From this we learn that praying for a son is a Sunnah of the Prophets, but only with the intention of religious preservation and reward in the Hereafter.
However, expressing disappointment at the birth of a daughter is the practice of infidels and not part of prophetic character.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Maryam verse 4 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Maryam ayat 1 which provides the complete commentary from verse 1 through 6.

(19:5) I fear evil from my kinsmen after I am gone;[3] and my wife is barren, so grant me an heir out of Your special grace,

Ala-Maududi

(19:5) I fear evil from my kinsmen after I am gone;[3] and my wife is barren, so grant me an heir out of Your special grace,

3. That is, I see none among my kinsmen, the family of Abiah, who is religiously and morally sound and capable of carrying on the work of the mission that has been entrusted to me.

(5) And indeed, I fear the successors[808] after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir

[808]- Those relatives from the father's side who would inherit religious authority.
