Transliteration:( Yaa Zakariyyaaa innaa nubashshiruka bi ghulaamin ismuhoo Yahyaa lam naj'al lahoo min qablu samiyyaa )
"O Zakariya! We give you glad tidings [11] of a son whose name is Yahya. We have not given this name to anyone before him [12]." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)
Allah Almighty spoke to Hazrat Zakariya through the medium of angels.
In another verse, it is stated:
"Then the angels called him" (Surah Aal-e-Imran: Verse 39).
That verse serves as a commentary and reinforcement of this verse.
This means that just as his name is unique and without precedent, some of his deeds will also be unmatched.
Hazrat Yahya was an unparalleled hermit and devotee of Allah Almighty.
From this, we learn that while we name our children, it is Allah Himself who names His Prophets, and He becomes the guardian of their names and actions.
Hazrat Isa (on whom be peace) had foretold that the name of our Holy Prophet would be Ahmad (Surah As-Saff: Verse 6).
7. (Allah said) “O Zakariyya! Verily, We give you the good news of a son, whose name will be Yahya. We have given that name to none before (him).”
This statement implies what is not mentioned, that his supplication was answered. It was said to him,
((Allah said) “O Zakariyya! Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son, whose name will be Yahya…”) Similarly Allah, the Exalted, said;
(At that time Zakariyya invoked his Lord, saying: “O my Lord! Grant me from You, a good offspring. You are indeed the All-Hearer of invocation.” Then the angels called him, while he was standing in prayer in the Mihrab, (saying): “Allah gives you glad tidings of Yahya, confirming (believing in) the word from Allah, noble, keeping away from sexual relations with women, a Prophet, from among the righteous.”)﴿3:38-39﴾ Allah said,
(We have given that name to none before (him).) Qatadah, Ibn Jurayj and Ibn Zayd said, “This means that no one had this name before him.” Ibn Jarir preferred this interpretation, may Allah have mercy upon him.
(19:7) (He was told): “Zechariah, We bring you the good news of the birth of a son whose name shall be Yahya (John), one whose namesake We never created before.”[5]
5. In Luke the words are: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. (1: 61).
