📖 Commentary of Surah Maryam – Verse 44

"O my father, do not worship Shaytaan [74]. Indeed, Shaytaan is disobedient to the Most Merciful [75]."

✅ [74] Do Not Worship Shaytaan

  • Hazrat Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) advised his uncle not to obey or serve Shaytaan, which means not to commit disbelief or shirk.

  • The term worship here refers to obedience and devotion, not literal prostration.

  • A disbeliever or polytheist, by following falsehood, is essentially aligning with Shaytaan.

  • Although Shaytaan is a creation of Allah, obedience to him is akin to servitude.

✅ [75] Shaytaan’s Disobedience

  • Shaytaan became a rebel when he refused to prostrate to Hazrat Adam (علیہ السلام).

  • He was expelled from Divine mercy due to this disobedience.

  • Those who follow him inherit his rebellion, and are deprived of Allah’s blessings.

  • Following the disobedient distances one from Allah and leads to punishment.

🔹 Note: The verse emphasizes breaking away from inherited misguidance and warns against obeying those who oppose Divine commands, even if they are close family.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Maryam verse 44 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Maryam ayat 41 which provides the complete commentary from verse 41 through 45.

(19:44) Father, do not serve Satan,[27] for Satan has indeed been a persistent rebel against the Most Compassionate Lord.

Ala-Maududi

(19:44) Father, do not serve Satan,[27] for Satan has indeed been a persistent rebel against the Most Compassionate Lord.

27. It should be noted that the literal translation of the Arabic text is: “Do not worship Satan”, though Abraham’s father and the other people did not worship Satan in the same sense as they worshiped idols. But as they followed and obeyed Satan, he accused them of worshiping Satan. Thus it is clear that if somebody follows and obeys Satan, he virtually worships him. For Satan has never been a deity in the sense that people have made him an object of worship; nay, they have always been cursing him and following him at the same time. For further details see (Surah Al-Kahf, ayat 51-50) note 49-50.

27a. For explanation, see (Surah At-Taubah, ayat 114) note 112.

(44) O my father, do not worship [i.e., obey] Satan. Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient.
