📖 Commentary of Surah Maryam – Verse 65

"Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them. So worship Him and remain steadfast [117] in His worship. Do you know any other name for Him [118]?"

✅ [117] Steadfastness in Worship

This verse commands the worship of Allah, who is the Lord of the heavens, the earth, and all that lies between. The instruction to "remain steadfast" in His worship teaches a profound lesson:

  • True excellence lies in consistent worship, both in ease and in hardship.

  • Worshipping only during times of comfort or only in distress is not a mark of sincerity.

  • The truly beloved servants of Allah are those who persevere in devotion, regardless of circumstances.

This is a call for lifelong, unwavering servitude to Allah, based not on personal convenience, but on deep reverence and commitment.

✅ [118] The Uniqueness of Allah’s Name

The rhetorical question:
"Do you know any other name for Him?"
highlights the absolute uniqueness and unmatched majesty of Allah Almighty.

Even the idolaters of Makkah, despite their polytheism, never called their false gods “Allah”—they recognized the uniqueness of this Name.

Furthermore, this verse hints at two key points:

  • No one shares Allah’s Name, so how can anyone be associated with His actions? If His Name is singular, then so is His power and lordship.

  • Similarly, the name "Muhammad" ﷺ, was never given to any Prophet or saint before the Holy Prophet ﷺ. Allah preserved that honorable name for the Final Messenger ﷺ, highlighting both the uniqueness of Allah and the uniqueness of His beloved Prophet ﷺ.

This verse affirms Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) and the exalted rank of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, both in name and mission.

Please refer to Surah Maryam ayat 64 which provides the complete commentary from verse 64 through 65.

(19:65) He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is in between. Serve Him, then, and be constant in serving Him.[40] Do you know anyone that might be His compeer?”[41]

Ala-Maududi

(19:65) He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is in between. Serve Him, then, and be constant in serving Him.[40] Do you know anyone that might be His compeer?”[41]

40. That is, you should not only follow strictly the way of service and face all the obstacles and afflictions with patience, but also should not get uneasy, if there is a delay in revelation and help. You should rest content with His service as an obedient servant and perform persistently the duties and responsibilities entrusted to you as a servant and Messenger.

41. The word Samiya literally means a name sake. Here it implies: Allah is the only Deity. Do you know of any other deity besides Him? If there is none, and you know that there is none, then you do not have any alternative but to serve Him and obey His commands.

(65) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them - so worship Him and have patience for His worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?"
