📖 Commentary of Surah Maryam – Verse 47

He said, "Peace be upon you [78]. I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord [79], indeed, He is ever-kind to me [80]."

✅ [78] Greeting with Distance

  • The phrase means a distant greeting, not a prayer of peace or acceptance.

  • It is forbidden to pray forgiveness for an infidel, as Allah says:
"It is not worthy of the Prophet and the believers to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even though they may be relatives" (S9:V113).

  • This greeting expresses displeasure, not warmth.

✅ [79] Interceding with Prayer

  • Hazrat Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) promises to ask Allah’s forgiveness for his father during special prayers like Tahajjud.

  • This shows the best son-father relationship is one where the son prays and guides the father spiritually.

✅ [80] Reliance on Allah’s Kindness

  • The prayer is for Allah’s guidance to help the father accept faith and become worthy of forgiveness.

  • Prayer for forgiveness is only valid if the person is guided and becomes a believer.
