📖 Commentary of Surah Maryam – Verse 42

“When he said to his father, ‘O my father, why do you worship that which neither hears nor sees, and it is of no benefit to you?’” (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

✅ [70] Meaning of “Father” – Who Was Azar?

  • The word “father” here refers to Azar, who was actually Hazrat Ibrahim’s (علیہ السلام) uncle, not his biological father.

  • In Arabic and Semitic usage, uncles are commonly referred to as fathers.

  • It is unanimously agreed by scholars that none among the male or female ancestors of the Holy Prophet ﷺ were polytheists—they were all believers.

  • This is confirmed by the Qur’anic verse:
“And your movements among those who offer prayers” (Surah Shu'ara 26:219)
➤ Meaning: the Noor (light) of the Prophet ﷺ was always transferred through pure and believing ancestors.

✅ [71] Refutation of Idol Worship

  • Hazrat Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) pointed out the irrationality of idol worship:
“They neither hear nor see and are of no benefit.”

  • This means that idols cannot help or harm in worldly or religious matters—such power belongs solely to Allah Almighty.

  • Note: While stones, iron, etc. may be materially useful, they are created objects meant to serve us, not be worshipped. The objection here is about ascribing divinity to them, not their utility.

🔹 Insight: This verse showcases the polite yet firm invitation to Tawheed (Oneness of Allah) by Prophet Ibrahim (علیہ السلام), even while addressing a close family member.
