📖 Commentary of Surah Maryam – Verse 87

"They do not possess any intercession [150], except for those who have taken a covenant with the Most Affectionate [151]."

✅ [150] No Intercession for Disbelievers

This verse rejects the intercession of idols and denies intercession for disbelievers. Only those whom Allah permits will intercede.

✅ [151] Permission for the Intercessors

The exception refers to those who have been granted permission—like our Beloved Prophet ﷺ, who has already been given this right in the world. His prostration on the Day of Judgement is a respectful way of seeking permission to intercede, affirming the etiquette of speaking in Allah’s court.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Maryam verse 87 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Maryam ayat 85 which provides the complete commentary from verse 85 through 87.

(19:87) On that Day none will have the power to intercede for them except those who received a sanction from the Most Compassionate Lord.[52]

Ala-Maududi

(19:87) On that Day none will have the power to intercede for them except those who received a sanction from the Most Compassionate Lord.[52]

52. This implies two things: (1) Intercession will be allowed only for the one who might have received permission for it from the Merciful, that is, the one who believed in Allah in the world and made himself deserving of His pardon. (2) Only that one will be able to plead intercession who might have received permission for this from the Merciful, and not those ones whom people themselves had made their intercessors without any reason.

(87) None will have [power of] intercession except he who had taken from the Most Merciful a covenant.[828]

[828]- Not to worship other than Him.
