Quran-18:109 Surah Al-kahf English Translation,Transliteration and Tafsir(Tafseer).

Transliteration:( Qul law kaanal bahru midaadal li kalimaati Rabbee lanafidal bahru qabla an tanfada Kalimaatu Rabbee wa law ji'naa bimislihee madadaa )

109. Say you, if the sea be the ink for the words of my Lord, then necessarily, the sea would be exhausted and the words of my Lord would not come to an end (235) though We may bring the likes of it for help' (236),

Surah Al-Kahf Ayat 109 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

235 .Reason for its revelation:

Once a group of Jews said in the presence of the Holy Prophet that two verses of your Holy QUR'AAN are always contradicting one another. In one verse it is said that you are given little knowledge. In another verse it is stated that whoever is given wisdom he is granted abundance in good.

Since wisdom, has been granted to us, therefore how is it that we have been given less knowledge? As a reply to their objection, this verse was revealed in which it is said that no matter how much knowledge the creation may have obtained, but in comparison to the knowledge of Allah Almighty, it is totally insignificant. Here, "Words of Allah" denote the knowledge and Wisdom of Allah Almighty.

236. Here, mention is being made of two oceans, while in another verse seven oceans are mentioned. This tells us that the sciences of Allah Almighty are limitless. Furthermore, we learn that the entire knowledge of all the Prophets in comparison to that of Allah Almighty is not even like a drop in the ocean, because that is a ratio of the limited with the limited, while this, in comparison, is the ratio of the limited with the unlimited.

Some Sufi sages comment that Hazrat Isa (On whom be peace) is the word of Allah Almighty, Hazrat Musa (On whom be peace) is the interlocutor of Allah Almighty, but our Holy Prophet is the highest form of interlocution of Allah Almighty. The praiseworthy qualities of our Holy Prophet are beyond description.

Ibn-Kathir

109. Say: “If the sea were ink for the Words of my Lord, surely, the sea would be exhausted before the Words of my Lord would be finished, even if We brought like it for its aid.”

The Words of the Lord can never be finished

Allah says: `Say, O Muhammad, if the water of the sea were ink for a pen to write down the words, wisdom and signs of Allah, the sea would run dry before it all could be written down.

﴿وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِ﴾

(even if We brought like it) means, another sea, then another, and so on, additional seas to be used for writing. The Words of Allah would still never run out. As Allah says:

(And if all the trees on the earth were pens and the sea (were ink), with seven seas behind it to increase it, yet the Words of Allah would not be exhausted. Verily, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.) ﴿31:27﴾ Ar-Rabi` bin Anas said, “The parable of the knowledge of all of mankind, in comparison to the knowledge of Allah, is that of a drop of water in comparison to all of the oceans.” Allah revealed that:

(Say: “If the sea were ink for the Words of my Lord, surely, the sea would be exhausted before the Words of my Lord would be finished,) Allah says that even if those oceans were ink for the Words of Allah, and all the trees were pens, the pens would be broken and the water of the sea would run dry, and the Words of Allah would remain, for nothing can outlast them. For no one can comprehend the greatness of Allah or praise Him as He deserves to be praised, except the One Who praises Himself. Our Lord is as He says He is and He is beyond what we can say. The blessings of this world, the beginning and end of it, in comparison to the blessings of the Hereafter, are like a mustard seed compared to the entire world.

(18:109) Say: “If the sea were to become ink to record the Words[79] of my Lord, indeed the sea would be all used up before the Words of my Lord are exhausted, and it would be the same even if We were to bring an equal amount of ink.”

79. By “words” are meant the marvelous works, the excellences and the wonders of His Power and Wisdom.
