Transliteration:( Wa qulil haqqu mir Rabbikum faman shaaa'a falyu'minw wa man shaaa'a falyakfur; innaaa a'tadnaa lizzaalimeena Naaran ahaata bihim suraadiquhaa; wa iny yastagheesoo yughaasoo bimaaa'in kalmuhli yashwil wujooh' bi'sash-sharaab; wa saaa'at murtafaqaa )

29. And say 'the truth is from your Lord. Then who so will, let him believe and who so will, let him disbelieve. (69). Undoubtedly We have already prepared for the unjust a fire whose walls would surround them( 70), and if they complain for water, then they will be like molten lead (71), that will burn the faces. What a bad drink it is and hell what an evil place to stay. (72),

Surah Al-Kahf Ayat 29 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

69.This means because of you, my poor Companions would not be separated from my company whether you accept Islam or not. Thus, this command is used for the purpose of expressing anger. This does not mean that Allah Almighty had given permission or choice of accepting or not accepting Islam. From this we learn that there is a great status for the poor Companions in the eyes of Allah Almighty.

70. Because you feel ashamed of yourselves to be in the company of the poor, and Paradise is the place set-aside for the poor, you would therefore be kept in Hell, wherein there will be just the leaders.

71.From this we learn that this boiling hot water and this food is set-aside for the infidels only. Allah Almighty will save the sinful believers from these, because believers will not receive the punishment of infidelity.

72. Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) said, that water would be thick and coarse like the sediment of the oil. When it would come near to the mouth the skin would burn and peel off. Some other scholars say it is molten lead. May Allah Almighty protect us from it! (Tafseer Khazain).

Ibn-Kathir

29. And say: “The truth is from your Lord.” Then whosoever wills, let him believe; and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve. Verily, We have prepared for the wrongdoers, a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them. And if they ask for drink, they will be granted water like Al-Muhl, that will scald their faces. Terrible is the drink, and an evil Murtafaq!

The Truth is from Allah, and the Punishment of Those Who do not believe in it

Allah says to His Messenger Muhammad : “Say to the people, `What I have brought to you from your Lord is the truth, in which there is no confusion or doubt.”’

(Then whosoever wills, let him believe; and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve.) This is a type of threat and stern warning, after which Allah says,

(Verily, We have prepared), meaning made ready,

(for the wrongdoers,) meaning those who disbelieve in Allah, His Messenger and His Book,

(a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them.) Ibn Jurayj said that Ibn `Abbas said,

(a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them.) “A wall of fire.”

(And if they ask for drink, they will be granted water like Al-Muhl, that will scald their faces.) Ibn `Abbas said; “Al-Muhl is thick water which is similar to the sediment in oil.” Mujahid said, “It is like blood and pus.” `Ikrimah said, “It is the thing that is heated to the ultimate temperature.” Others said: “It is everything that is melted.” Qatadah said, “Ibn Mas`ud melted some gold in a grove, and when it became liquid and foam rose to the top, he said, this is the thing that is most like Al-Muhl.” Ad-Dahhak said: “The water of Hell is black, and it itself is black and its people are black.” There is nothing contradictory in these comments, for Al-Muhl includes all of these unpleasant characteristics, it is black, evil-smelling, thick and hot, as Allah said,

(﴿it﴾ will scald their faces.) meaning because of its heat. When the disbeliever wants to drink it and brings it close to his face, it will scald it so that the skin of his face falls off into it. Sa`id bin Jubayr said, “When the people of Hell get hungry, they will ask for relief from it, and they will be given the tree of Zaqqum from which they will eat. The tree will tear off the skin of their faces, and if anyone who knew them were to pass by, he would recognize the skin of their faces in the tree. Then they will feel thirsty, so they will ask for drink, and they will be granted water like Al-Muhl, that is what has been heated to the ultimate temperature. When it is brought near their mouths, the flesh of their faces from which the skin has been torn off will be baked.” After describing this drink in these horrifying qualities, Allah says:

﴿بِئْسَ الشَّرَابُ﴾

(Terrible is the drink,) meaning, how awful this drink is. Similarly, He says in another Ayah:

﴿وَسُقُواْ مَآءً حَمِيماً فَقَطَّعَ أَمْعَآءَهُمْ﴾

(and be given to drink boiling water so that it cuts up their bowels.) ﴿47:15﴾

(They will be given to drink from a boiling spring.) ﴿88:5﴾

(They will go between it (Hell) and the fierce boiling water.) ﴿55:44﴾

(and an evil Murtafaq!) means, how evil a place is the Fire to dwell and rest and gather. As Allah says elsewhere:

﴿إِنَّهَا سَآءَتْ مُسْتَقَرّاً وَمُقَاماً ﴾

(Evil indeed it (Hell) is as an abode and as a place to rest in.) ﴿25:66﴾

(18:29) And proclaim: “This is the Truth from your Lord. Now let him who will, believe; and let him who will, disbelieve.[31] We have prepared a Fire for the wrong-doers whose billowing folds encompass them.[32] If they ask for water, they will be served with a drink like dregs of oil[33] that will scald their faces. How dreadful a drink, and how evil an abode!

Ala-Maududi

(18:29) And proclaim: “This is the Truth from your Lord. Now let him who will, believe; and let him who will, disbelieve.[31] We have prepared a Fire for the wrong-doers whose billowing folds encompass them.[32] If they ask for water, they will be served with a drink like dregs of oil[33] that will scald their faces. How dreadful a drink, and how evil an abode!

31. This verse makes it quite plain that the story of the sleepers of the cave has been related to tell the opponents of Islam: This is the truth from your Lord. Now whosoever wills, he may accept it and whosoever wills, he may reject it. But people must understand that no compromise will be made in regard to the truth just as the sleepers of the cave did not make any compromise with regard to their creed. They did not make any compromise in regard to the doctrine of Tauhid after they had believed in it and categorically declared: Our Lord is the One Who alone is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. After this declaration they did not in any way accede to the making of any compromise with their people, who had gone astray. But they firmly declared: We will not give Him up and pray to other deities, because it will be the most improper thing, if we did so. After making this declaration they left their people and deities and took refuge in the cave without taking any provisions with them. After this when they woke up, the only thing about which they showed any anxiety, was that their people might not succeed in forcing them back to their own faith. After relating these things, the Quran addresses the Prophet (peace be upon him) to the effect (though these words are really meant for the opponents of Islam): It is absolutely out of question whether any compromise can be made with mushriks and disbelievers. Present the truth intact to them whether they accept it or not. If they do not accept it, they themselves will meet with an evil end. As regards to those, who have accepted the truth, (whether they be youngsters or poor, indigent people or slaves or laborers) they are really those people who have a worth with Allah, and they alone will be honored. Therefore you should not discard them and prefer the chiefs and the rich people who may be neglectful of Allah and be slaves of their own desires, even though they might be possessors of worldly grandeur.

32. The Arabic word Suradiq literally means sides of a tent but, as used in the case of Hell, it may mean its external boundaries to which its flames and heat may reach. According to some commentators, it applies to the future tense “its walls will be surrounding them” so as to refer to the flames of Hell in the Hereafter. But we are of the opinion that its flames have already encircled, in this very world, these workers of iniquity, who have turned away from the truth and that they cannot escape them.

33. The Arabic word muhul has several lexical meanings. According to some people, it means the residue of oil; according to others, it is lava which is formed by the melting of things in the earth; according to some others, it is molten matter and according to others, it is pus and blood.
