📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Kahf – Verse 24

"But, if Allah wills. And remember your Lord when you forget, and say, ‘It is likely that my Lord will guide me to something closer to guidance than this.’"

✅ [54] The Reason Behind This Revelation

When the people of Makkah questioned the Holy Prophet ﷺ about the Companions of the Cave, he ﷺ promised to respond later. However, he did not say "In shaa Allah" (if Allah wills), and as a result, the revelation was delayed for several days. At that moment, Allah Almighty had not yet informed the Prophet ﷺ of the full details regarding the People of the Cave. This incident became the reason for the revelation of this verse and the previous one.

✅ [55] Remembering Allah Upon Forgetting

This part of the verse teaches that if a person forgets to say "In shaa Allah" initially, he should mention it as soon as he remembers. According to Tafseer Roohul Bayaan, when this verse was revealed, the Holy Prophet ﷺ himself recited "In shaa Allah." From this we also learn that if someone forgets to perform a religious obligation like Salaah, they should perform it immediately once they remember.

✅ [56] The Prophet’s Superior Guidance

This final portion indicates that the miracles and divine knowledge granted to the Prophet ﷺ are far superior to those involved in the story of the People of the Cave. Those asking about such stories were merely testing him, but the Prophet ﷺ would one day stand on his pulpit and describe events that would take place until the Day of Judgment. This statement, as prophesied, came true and is recorded in Hadith literature, highlighting the unmatched knowledge given to the Prophet ﷺ by Allah.

The tafsir of Surah Kahf verse 24 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Kahf ayat 23 which provides the complete commentary from verse 23 through 24.

(18:24) unless Allah should will it. And should you forget (and make such a statement), remember your Lord and say: “I expect my Lord to guide me[24] to what is nearer to rectitude than this.”

Ala-Maududi

(18:24) unless Allah should will it. And should you forget (and make such a statement), remember your Lord and say: “I expect my Lord to guide me[24] to what is nearer to rectitude than this.”

24. This is a parenthetical clause which has been inserted here because of its relevancy to the preceding verse, in which it was asserted that the correct number of the sleepers of the cave is known only to Allah and a research into it is a useless task. Therefore one should refrain from investigating into unimportant things, nor enter into discussions about them. This has led to the instruction contained in the parenthetical clause for the benefit of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the believers who have been told never to make a positive assertion like this: I will do this thing tomorrow, for you do not know whether you will be able to do that thing or not: you have neither the knowledge of the unknown nor have full powers to do what you like. If ever inadvertently you utter anything like this, you should at once remember your Lord and say, InshaAllah. Besides this you do not know whether there will be any good for you in the thing about which you say: I will do this. It is possible that you may do another thing better than that. Therefore you should trust in God and say: I hope that my Lord will guide me in this matter with that thing which is nearer to the right way for me.

(24) Except [when adding], "If Allāh wills." And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct."
