Transliteration:( Wa rabatnaa 'alaa quloo bihim iz qaamoo faqaaloo Rabbunaa Rabbus samaawaati wal ardi lan nad'uwa min dooniheee ilaahal laqad qulnaaa izan shatataa )

14. We strengthened their hearts [19] when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will not invoke any deity [20] besides Him. If we did so, we would have certainly spoken an excessive [21] thing." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(14) And We bound [i.e., made firm] their hearts when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Kahf – Verse 14

"We strengthened their hearts [19] when they stood up and said, 'Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will not invoke any deity [20] besides Him. If we did so, we would have certainly spoken an excessive [21] thing.'"

✅ [19] Steadfastness in the Face of Tyranny

This means that Allah Almighty firmly established them upon the truth and granted them courage and strength to proclaim their faith openly before Emperor Daqyanus, despite the danger. Their bold declaration was not due to worldly power but purely through Divine support.

✅ [20] Invocation Means Worship, Not Mere Calling

Here, the word "Dua" refers to worship, not simply calling or addressing. This is important to note because:

  • In daily life, people call upon others for help in worldly and religious matters.

  • Even Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) called upon lifeless birds (as a miracle).

  • In every Tashahhud, we say: "Peace be upon you, O Prophet", which is a form of address.

Thus, what they rejected was worshipping anyone other than Allah, not the act of calling in general.

✅ [21] Refusal of Idol Worship

Their statement to Daqyanus was essentially this:
"We shall never worship the idols you have crafted. To do so would be an outrageous and unjust act."

Calling it "excessive" (شَطَطًا) here means extremely wrongful, unjust, and beyond all limits of truth.
