📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Kahf – Verse 2

"The Book, upright, to warn [3] of a severe punishment from Him, and to give glad tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds – that for them [4] is a good reward."

✅ [3] The Purpose of Warning

This verse indicates that either this Book, or the Holy Prophet ﷺ through the message of this Book, should instill fear in the disbelievers and the negligent, warning them about the punishments of this world and the Hereafter.

✅ [4] A Message of Hope and Encouragement

It should be remembered that the Holy Qur’an serves as a giver of glad tidings to the pious believers, and also as a source of hope for the sinful believers. Allah Almighty declares:

"Despair not of the mercy of Allah" (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53)

Therefore, the mention of "those who do righteous deeds" as a condition is correct and meaningful. According to the terminology of the saints and spiritual masters, righteous deeds are those performed solely to gain the pleasure of Allah Almighty and His Prophet ﷺ.

For instance, prayer (salaah) offered for the sake of show or pride is in fact an evil act, whereas even eating, drinking, sleeping, or staying awake – when done with the intention of pleasing Allah Almighty – is counted as an act of piety.
