📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Kahf – Verse 5

"They have no knowledge about it, nor do their forefathers [7]. What a monstrous word it is that comes out [8] from their mouths. They are merely telling a lie."

✅ [7] True Knowledge vs. Compound Ignorance

Here, the word ‘knowledge’ does not simply refer to knowing something, but rather to knowing that which corresponds to truth. To be aware of something false and still believe it is termed compound ignorance.

Therefore, there is no contradiction in this verse. It rightly negates the existence of true knowledge regarding the false claim that Allah has a son.

✅ [8] The Severity of the Blasphemous Statement

Such a claim is a monstrous utterance, because saying that Allah has a child necessitates (God forbid) belief in Allah being temporary, helpless, dependent, resembling creation, and having a partner or associate—all of which are attributes of created beings, not of the Eternal Creator.

Hence, believing that Allah has children is among the most severe forms of disbelief.

Please refer to Surah Kahf ayat 1 which provides the complete commentary from verse 1 through 5.

(18:5) a thing about which they have no knowledge,[3] neither they nor their ancestors. Dreadful is the word that comes out of their mouths. What they utter is merely a lie.

Ala-Maududi

(18:5) a thing about which they have no knowledge,[3] neither they nor their ancestors. Dreadful is the word that comes out of their mouths. What they utter is merely a lie.

3. “Dreadful is the word” That one is the son of God, or Allah has adopted that one as a son. This has been declared to be dreadful because it was not based o any knowledge that Allah has a son or has adopted a son. They had merely exaggerated their love for someone and invented such a relationship. And they do not realize that it is a dreadful blasphemy, impudence and fabrication that they are uttering in regards to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.

(5) They have no knowledge of it,[780] nor had their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths; they speak not except a lie.

[780]- i.e., they could not have had knowledge of something which is not true.
