📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Kahf – Verse 36

"And I do not think that the Hour will ever come, [87] and even if I am returned to my Lord, [88] I will surely find better than this as a place of return." [89]

✅ [87] Denial of the Hereafter

This means, “I do not even suspect that Qiyamah (the Hour) will occur; in fact, I am certain it will not happen.”
This verse clarifies that some disbelievers not only doubt the Hereafter but outright deny it, so it is not contradictory to state that others might simply be skeptical.

✅ [88] False Hope in the Face of Sin

From this, we learn that hoping for Paradise while committing evil deeds is the way of the disbelievers.
They behave as if they can sow evil and still reap good, whereas reward is always tied to sincere effort and righteousness.

✅ [89] Arrogance in Divine Favor

Here he arrogantly claims: “Even if Judgement Day comes, I will still receive something better—gardens greater than these.”
This reflects the false assumption that worldly wealth is a sign of Allah’s eternal favor, whereas in reality, it is a test and not necessarily a reward.

The tafsir of Surah Kahf verse 36 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Kahf ayat 32 which provides the complete commentary from verse 32 through 36.

(18:36) Nor do I believe that the Hour of Resurrection will ever come to pass. And even if I am returned to my Lord, I shall find a better place than this.”[38]

Ala-Maududi

(18:36) Nor do I believe that the Hour of Resurrection will ever come to pass. And even if I am returned to my Lord, I shall find a better place than this.”[38]

38. That is, I don’t think there is any life after death, but supposing there be one, I shall fare even better there than in my present life, for my prosperity is a clear proof that I am a favorite of God.

(36) And I do not think the Hour will occur. And even if I should be brought back to my Lord, I will surely find better than this as a return."
