Transliteration:( Wa maa nursilul mursaleena illaa mubashshireena wa munzireen; wa yujaadilul lazeena kafaroo bilbaatili liyudhidoo bihil haqqa wattakhazooo Aayaatee wa maaa unziroo huzuwaa )

56. And we send not the messenger but as bearers of glad tidings and warners (132), and those who are infidels contend (133), with falsehood that they may subvert (134), the truth where with, and they took My signs and what they were warned of, as a joke.

Surah Al-Kahf Ayat 56 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

132.In this verse Allah Almighty has revealed the independence of His Prophets, that they have been given the responsibility of giving glad tidings and giving warnings. They are not duty bound for your guidance. Thus, if the entire world were to go astray, it would do no harm to them in any way. Yet, not accepting guidance would bring about their own destruction. These great sages are the reflection of Allah Almighty's grandeur.

133.Because they were taking the Prophets to be ordinary human beings like them and claiming equality with them. They entered into debates with them.

134.This means they are trying to extinguish the light of the sun through their puny puffs of breaths.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Kahf verse 56 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Kahf ayat 55 which provides the complete commentary from verse 55 through 59.

(18:56) We raise Messengers only to give good news and to warn.[53] But the unbelievers resort to falsehood in order to rebut the truth with it, and scoff at My revelations and My warnings.

Ala-Maududi

(18:56) We raise Messengers only to give good news and to warn.[53] But the unbelievers resort to falsehood in order to rebut the truth with it, and scoff at My revelations and My warnings.

53. This verse has two meanings.

(1) We send Our Messengers to forewarn the people before the coming of the judgment of the good results of obedience and the evil consequences of disobedience. But these foolish people are not taking advantage of these forewarnings and insist on seeing the same evil end from which the Messengers desire to save them.

(2) If they insist on meeting with the scourge, they should not demand this from the Messenger because the Messenger is sent not to bring a scourge but to warn the people beforehand to escape from it.
