📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Kahf – Verse 65

"Then they found a servant [151] from Our servants, to whom We had given mercy from Us and taught him knowledge from Us [152]."

✅ [151] The Identity of the Wise Servant – Hazrat Khizr (علیہ السلام)

This refers to Hazrat Khizr (on whom be peace). His actual name is Balyaan ibn Malkan ibn Falikh ibn Amir ibn Shalikh ibn Araf Khashad ibn Saam ibn Nuh (on whom be peace). His appellation is Abul Abbas, and his title is Shareef Khazir—with Zabar on the letter "Kha" and Zer on the letter "Dwad".

He is among the four Prophets who will remain alive until the Day of Judgement:

  • On the earth: Hazrat Khizr and Hazrat Ilyas (on whom be peace)

  • In the heavens: Hazrat Idris and Hazrat Isa (on whom be peace)
    (Tafseer Roohul Ma'ani)

He was given the name Khizr because wherever he sat on dry land, greenery would instantly sprout. Many other miraculous traditions are also narrated about him.

✅ [152] Ilm-e-Ladunni – Divine Knowledge Without Formal Tutoring

The knowledge Hazrat Khizr was granted is known as Ilm-e-Ladunnidivinely inspired knowledge without human instruction.

Such knowledge is granted by Allah directly, and many Prophets possess this innate, inspired wisdom. Hazrat Adam (on whom be peace) too was granted such knowledge, emphasizing that true divine guidance surpasses conventional learning.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Kahf verse 65 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Kahf ayat 60 which provides the complete commentary from verse 60 through 65.

(18:65) and there they found one of Our servants upon whom We had bestowed Our mercy, and to whom We had imparted a special knowledge from Ourselves.[59]

Ala-Maududi

(18:65) and there they found one of Our servants upon whom We had bestowed Our mercy, and to whom We had imparted a special knowledge from Ourselves.[59]

59. The name of this servant has been stated to be Khidr in all the authentic books of traditions. Thus there is no reason why it should be considered at all that his name was Elijah, as some people have asserted under the influence of the Israelite traditions. Their assertion is incorrect not only because it contradicts the assertion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) but it is also absurd because Prophet Elijah (peace be upon him) was born several hundred years after Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). Though the Quran does not mention the name of the attendant of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him), according to some traditions he was Joshua, the son of Nun, who succeeded him.

(65) And they found a servant from among Our servants [i.e., al-Khiḍr] to whom We had given mercy from Us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge.
