📖 Commentary of Surah Taha – Verse 108

On that day they will run behind [149] the caller, there will be no crookedness in him, and all voices will be low [150] before the Most Affectionate, then you will not hear but a very low sound [151].

✅ [149] The Voice of Israfeel

This refers to the voice of Israfeel (peace be upon him), which will be heard at the time of the second trumpet. This sound will reach every corner of the earth, awakening everyone who will then rise and run.

✅ [150] Silence in Awe and Fear

Due to the overwhelming awe and fear of Allah Almighty, complete silence will prevail at the Field of Resurrection (Mahshar). This marks the first stage of the Day of Qiyamah, before petitions, pleas, and interrogations begin. There is no contradiction here between the verses.

✅ [151] The Low Sound

This low sound may be the noise of feet walking from graves toward the Mahshar or within it, either seeking intercession or for other reasons.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ta-Ha verse 108 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Taha ayat 105 which provides the complete commentary from verse 105 through 108.

(20:108) On that Day people shall follow straight on to the call of the summoner, no one daring to show any haughtiness. Their voices shall be hushed before the Most Compassionate Lord, so that you will hear nothing but a whispering murmur.[84]

Ala-Maududi

(20:108) On that Day people shall follow straight on to the call of the summoner, no one daring to show any haughtiness. Their voices shall be hushed before the Most Compassionate Lord, so that you will hear nothing but a whispering murmur.[84]

84. The original Arabic word hams is used for the sound of footsteps, the sound of whispering and other low sounds. What it implies here is that the people will be so awestricken on that Day that there will be no sound other than that of footsteps and whispering.

(108) That Day, they [i.e., everyone] will follow [the call of] the Caller[856] [with] no deviation therefrom, and [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper [of footsteps].

[856]- To the gathering for judgement.
