Transliteration:( Wa laqad qaala lahum Haaroonu min qablu yaa qawmi innamaa futintum bihee wa inna Rabbakumur Rahmaanu fattabi'oonee wa atee'ooo amree )
And indeed, Harun had told them from before that, “O my people! You have fallen into temptation on account of it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most-Affectionate [127], therefore follow me and obey my command.” [128]
Hazrat Harun (peace be upon him) had warned them before Musa’s return that they had fallen into a great trial by worshipping the calf.
He reminded them that their true Lord is Ar-Rahman (the Most Affectionate)—emphasizing that repentance is still possible.
This gentle address shows the Prophetic wisdom of encouraging people to turn back before punishment descends.
Hazrat Harun commanded, “Follow me and obey my command,” showing that:
Obedience to the Prophet is essential for guidance.
Belief in Allah alone (Tawheed) is not enough without obedience to the Prophet’s authority.
This verse refutes the notion that Prophetic leadership is optional.
The discussion also alludes to the incorrect Rafzi claim comparing Hazrat Harun to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
While Hazrat Harun never accepted shirk, the claim that Hazrat Ali only outwardly pledged allegiance while opposing leadership is inconsistent with Islamic history.
Thus, the verse confirms:
True guidance lies in obedience to the divinely appointed Prophet, not in selective allegiance or symbolic defiance.
90. And Harun indeed had said to them beforehand: “O my people! You are being tried in this, and verily, your Lord is (Allah) the Most Gracious, so follow me and obey my order.” 91. They said: “We will not stop worshipping it, until Musa returns to us.”
Allah, the Exalted, informs of Harun’s attempt to prohibit them from worshipping the calf and his telling them that this was only a test for them. He told them that their Lord was the Most Beneficent, Who created everything and decreed for everything its just measure. He is the Owner of the Mighty Throne, the One Who does whatever He wants.
(so follow me and obey my order.) Meaning, “Follow me in that which I am commanding you with and leave that which I forbid you from.”
(They said: “We will not stop worshipping it, until Musa returns to us.”) meaning, “We will not cease in our worship of this calf until we hear what Musa has to say about it.” So they opposed Harun in this matter and they fought against him, nearly killing him.
(20:90) Certainly Aaron had said to them even before (the return of Moses): “My people, you were fallen into error because of the calf. Surely your Lord is Most Compassionate; so follow me and obey my command.”
