📖 Commentary of Surah Taha – Verse 82

And indeed, I am the most forgiving to him who repented [110] and believed and did good deeds, then remained on guidance. [111]

✅ [110] Conditions of True Repentance

Allah declares His immense forgiveness, but it is conditional upon sincere and complete repentance:

  • Repentance from disbelief by embracing true faith.

  • Repentance from sins by seeking forgiveness and abstaining.

  • Repentance for violating human rights by fulfilling those rights or compensating the wronged party, even if delayed.

This illustrates that true repentance is tailored to the nature of one’s sin.

✅ [111] Remaining Firm Upon Guidance

According to Hazrat Thabit Bannani and Imam Jafar Saadiq (may Allah be pleased with them), true guidance is tied to love for the family of the Holy Prophet ﷺ (Ahle Bait) (Siwaiq-e-Muharriqa).

Thus, faith and repentance are only meaningful if they lead to a steadfast and guided life, ending in success.
Just as a crop is only called good if it yields a fruitful harvest, so too is faith measured by its conclusion.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ta-Ha verse 82 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Taha ayat 80 which provides the complete commentary from verse 80 through 82.

(20:82) But I am indeed Most Forgiving to him who repents and believes and does righteous works and keeps to the Right Way.”[60]

Ala-Maududi

(20:82) But I am indeed Most Forgiving to him who repents and believes and does righteous works and keeps to the Right Way.”[60]

60. According to this (Surah TaHa, ayat 82), there are four conditions for forgiveness:

(1) Repentance: to refrain from rebellion, disobedience, shirk or disbelief.

(2) Faith: sincere belief in Allah and the Messenger and the Book and the Hereafter.

(3) Righteous works: to do good deeds according to the instructions of Allah and His Messenger.

(4) Guidance: to follow the right way steadfastly and to refrain from straying into any wrong path.

(82) But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
