58. Then necessarily, we too bring a [68] and like magic before you, so make an appointment between us yourself, neither we change nor you, at an even place [69].
This means that Pharaoh proposed to call magicians who would perform tricks such as transforming sticks and ropes into snakes, mimicking what Hazrat Musa (On whom be peace) had done.
Here, “even” may have two meanings:
A spacious, level ground where a large crowd could easily gather to witness the challenge.
A neutral spot midway between Pharaoh’s palace and Hazrat Musa’s (On whom be peace) place, so that no side would have an unfair advantage.
🔹 It should also be noted that Pharaoh misled the people by claiming that Hazrat Musa (On whom be peace) had gone abroad to learn magic during his absence from Egypt.
🔹 In reality, Hazrat Musa had gone to Madyan to Hazrat Shuaib (On whom be peace).
🔹 By contrast, Allah Almighty kept the Holy Prophet ﷺ in Makkah throughout, so the Makkans could not claim that he had left to study magic elsewhere.
