📖 Commentary of Surah Taha – Verse 63

They said, 'indeed, these both are necessarily, magicians, they desire to drive you out from your land by the strength of their magic and take away your good religion. [76]

✅ [76] Misrepresentation of Truth as Threat

They claimed that Musa and Haroon (peace be upon them) were magicians aiming to expel them from their land through their magic and to eliminate their religion.

That is, they feared being turned away from the worship of Pharaoh and being invited instead to worship Allah Almighty. At that time, they mistakenly considered the worship of Pharaoh to be a noble and righteous practice.

Ibn-Kathir

Please refer to Surah Taha ayat 60 which provides the complete commentary from verse 60 through 64.

(20:63) Some of them said:[36] “These two are magicians, who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and to destroy your excellent way of life.[37]

Ala-Maududi

(20:63) Some of them said:[36] “These two are magicians, who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and to destroy your excellent way of life.[37]

36. Those who were of this view must have been a few fanatics of Pharaoh’s party who were prepared to go to any extent to oppose Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). Those people must have been preparing the public for a determined encounter, while the reasonable people among them must have been advising caution and restraint.

37. Probably those people based their argument on two things:

(1) If their magicians would be able to turn their staffs into serpents, it would be a clear proof that Moses (peace be upon him) was a sorcerer.

(2) If, on the other hand, Moses (peace be upon him) won, the rulers would lose their country, and their ideal way of life, which reflected their culture, their arts, their civilization, their recreations, etc. would automatically come to an end. Therefore they should do all they could to defeat Moses (peace be upon him).

(63) They said, "Indeed, these are two magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and do away with your most exemplary way [i.e., religion or tradition].
