Transliteration:( Qaala hiya 'asaaya atawakka'u alaihaa wa ahushshu bihaa 'alaa ghanamee wa liya feehaa ma aaribu ukhraa )
"He said, 'It is my staff [19], I lean on it, and with it I beat down leaves for my sheep, and there are my other works in it.' [20]"
The staff of Hazrat Musa (عليه السلام) had two prongs at its upper end, and its name was Nabgha.
The purpose of Allah asking about the staff was to prepare Hazrat Musa (عليه السلام) for the miracle of its transformation into a snake. This allowed him to witness the miracle first so that he would not feel afraid when later confronting Pharaoh with it.
From this verse, we learn that when there is a conflict between love and respect, love prevails.
The respectful answer would have been a brief reply: “A stick.”
But Hazrat Musa (عليه السلام), out of love for his Lord, prolonged his response, elaborating on the many uses of his staff—just to extend the conversation and prolong the divine connection.
The tafsir of Surah Ta-Ha verse 18 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Taha ayat 17 which provides the complete commentary from verse 17 through 21.
(20:18) Moses answered: “This is my staff. I lean on it (when I walk), and with it I beat down leaves for my flock, and I have many other uses for it.”[12]
12. Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) deliberately prolonged his answer and did not stop at: It is my staff. This was because he naturally wanted to prolong the dialogue to make the privilege meeting last longer.
